Input-output

The tables show the correlations between imports, production and use in the economy by an organised array of detailed economic statistics from the national accounts. Supplemented with certain assumptions, the tables allow modeling of correlations in the economy that are not directly shown in the national accounts.

Introduction

Tables of this kind have been used off and on in Denmark since the 1930s. With the national accounts’ current definitions, input-output tables have been prepared for all years starting in 1966 at current prices as well as previous year's prices. It should be noted, however, that the tables regarding 1966-1982 have been repeatedly subjected to  backward calculations as a result of new methods and classifications, but the tables from 1993 to 2004 have only been subject to a single backward calculation as a result of the data and methods revision in 2014. For each year from 2005 onwards, the presentation of current prices is based on product balances, while the same applies to the previous year's prices for the years 2008 onwards.

From the national accounts’ approx. 2,350 product balances, a table is created that demonstrates, in monetary terms, how goods and services in the economy have been flowing between supply and demand. On the supply side, the trades and industries, imports and other primary inputs are shown, including the remuneration of employees, while the demand side is made up of the trades and industries and the final demands, including private consumption and exports. The table is presented in basic prices, including customs duties on imports, though. This is the level where the greatest homogeneity between values and volumes is found.

The input-output tables form the basis for the compilation of the input-output models. By using these models, it is possible to analyse both direct and indirect effects on employment, for example, energy consumption or gross value added attributable to changes in demand. Another important use is the so-called structural breakdown analyses which can help to reveal how much each factor has contributed to the development of different variables, including, for example, CO2 emissions or employment.

Danish annual Input-Output tables

The Danish Input-output tables are now available in two different series. The original series from 1966-2015 is presented in the most detailed classification available based on the annual supply-use tables. A new series from 1966-2017 is somewhat more aggregated, which, allows the series to be extended to 2017 by forecasting the 2015 tables on the basis of already published national accounts totals. Data can be obtained in two different ways.

1) Go to www.statbank.dk - National Accounts and government finance - InputOutput tables
2) From the tab “Data” on this page, from where files in Excel, GAUSS, GAMS and SAS formats
can be downloaded. PDF documents with table of contents of the files can be downloaded from this page.

NEWS

June 30, 2021

Today the series of final IO-tables with 117 industries has been supplemented with data for the year 2018. Also, the series of input output tables with 69 industries has been updated with data for the year 2018 as well as preliminary version of the tables for 2019. The reason that the 2020 table has not been published is the decision not to publish any part of the national accounts for 2020 at a more detailed level than 21 industries. So instead of making a 21*21 input-output table for 2020 the publication of a first preliminary table for 202 has been postponed until June 2022.

December 3, 2020

Today the 2017 version of the input-output tables with 69 industries has been updated. Due to a mistake, only 2018 and 2019 was updates on October 2, 2020.

As from today the 69 industry version is fully compatible with the 117 industry version for 2017, which has not been the case since October 2.

October 2, 2020

Today the series of final IO-tables with 117 industries has been supplemented with data for the year 2017. Also, the series of input output tables with 69 industries has been updated with data for the year 2017 as well as preliminary versions of the tables for 2017 and 2018.

November 7, 2019

Today the series of final IO-tables with 117 industries has been supplemented with data for the year 2016. Also, the series of input output tables with 69 industries has been updated with data for the year 2016 as well as preliminary versions of the tables for 2017 and 2018.

November 15, 2018

Today the input-output table for 2008-2009 in previous years prices have been updated. The update

takes care of a minor error in Government Consumption in previous years prices.

November 7, 2018
Today the series of final 117 industry IO- tables has been supplemented with data for the year 2015. This is the standard annual update alongside with the update of the national accounts for 2015. At the same time the series of 69 industries has been updated to cover all the years from 1966 to 2017.

Starting from the present dissemination of the 69-industry tables it has been decided to reduce the number of gross fixed capital formation assets from 12 to 7. Thus the two following sums has been added

“ICT equipment, other machinery and equipment and weapon systems” which replaces the three formergroups
Computer hardware
Telecommunication equipment
Other machinery and equipment and weapon systems

“Intellectual property products” which replaces the four formergroups
Research and development
Mineral exploration and evaluation
Computer software and databases
Entertainment, literary or artistic originals and other intellectual property products

This change has brought the dissemination of the input-output tables in line with the national accounts where gross fixed capital formation by 69 industries is disseminated in the table NABK69.

The full dimension of the gross fixed capital formation table can still be found in the 117-industry tables covering the years from 1966 through 2015.

At the same time the Gross Value Added (BVT på dansk) section of Excel versions of the tables have been revised because some labels as well as data had been messed up.

April 5, 2018

Today the series of full sized IO- tables has been supplemented with the complete data for 2014 following the full release of the National Accounts for 2014 which now include wages, employment and hours worked at the most detailed industry level.

The input-output table for 2014-2016 in the 69-industries series has also been updated.

February 15, 2018
Today the English text for the two COICOP groups in household consumption 04401 and 04402 has been changed.
By mistake the text related to those two numbers was mixed up in the Excel files with English text as well as in the English
PDF-file describing the contents of the matrices. The correct connection between codes and text is

24  04401 Water supply and sewerage services
25  04402  Refuse collection, other services n.e.c.

November 15, 2017
Today the input-output table for 2014-2015 in the 69-industries series has been updated. The update concerns the split of Gross Value Added between
Wages and Gross Operating Surplus. Data has been changed in order to comply with other national accounts tables.

November 7, 2017
Today the series of full sized IO- tables has been supplemented with data for 2014. Due to a delay in the update of wages, employment and hours worked by detailed industry for 2014, Gross Valued Added in current prices is shown only as a total and not split in its components. For the same reason employment and hours worked are not shown for 2014. This will be brought back to normal when the missing data will be supplied I march 2018.

The delay has consequences for the forecasted tables at the 69 industry level as well. Here the same solution as described above is applied for the year 2016. In Statbank.dk some data on  employment, and hours worked are shown at a more aggregated level.

Finally, the entire series of Excel sheets from 1966 to 2014 has been updated due to a  mistake in the presentation of the detailed household consumption figures in previous years prices.

March 17, 2017

Today the input-output tables in the (69 industries) series has been updated for the entire period 1966-2015. The update is caused by an error in the key used for aggregation of a few of the detailed groups of household consumption from the 74 groups level to the 43 groups level.

January 17, 2017
Today the table NIO3 holding GVA (Gross Value Added) figures has been changed for 2015 in current prices in the Statbank due to an error. It has been corrected in the Excel, SAS, GAMS and GAUSS files as well.

November 23, 2016
In the new series of input-output tables at the 69 industry level, the two preliminary years 2014 and 2015  been updated on November 23, 2016. The calculation of the two years now builds upon the latest available version of all national accounts totals which was not true for all variables at the time of publication Novembe 15, 2016.

November 15, 2016
Today a revised version of the Danish national accounts 1966 through 2015 has been released. Revised figures for the Danish Balance of Payments 2002-2015 has been implemented along with new figures for government individual consumption, employment and a few other items. On top of that comes the ordinary update of data for 2013 through 2015 following the availability of new and updated sources.

The input-output tables have been revised in order to reflect those changes in the national accounts. Moreover, the revenue from foreign tourists in Denmark shown in the exports column has been fully aligned with the mirror of this number appearing in the household consumption with opposite sign. By a mistake this was not the case in the previous version of the tables.

The input-output tables has been released in the usual full 117 industry classification from 1966 through 2013 as well as in the new series of input-output tables covering 69 industries with forecasted versions of 2014 and 2015.

July 8, 2016
Today a new compilation of the input-output consistent investment matrices has been made available. These matrices add an extra dimension to the investment columns in the input-output tables. Thus for each of the investment columns in the Io-table, the investment matrices shows the supply from 117 industries of the particular investment by the 69 investing industries. The matrices are now available for the period 2008-2012 in current and previous year’s prices and can be downloaded in Excel format. GAUSS, GAMS and SAS formats will be made available for download shortly.

July 5, 2016
The Excel version of the new set of matrices (69 industries) have all been replaced today due to a problem with the texts related to a few industries. Thus the industries 84101, 84202, 85101, 85202 were listed in the true numerical order as they are here. They should, however, have been listed in the order 84202, 84101, 85202, 85101. This is the official ordering used for other tables at the 69-industry level. This mistake only concerns the texts and NOT the data, which were already in the right ordering.

Furthermore, a small mistake for the years 2013 and 2014 was discovered. Thus the cell containing deliveries from industry 68203 to household consumption “042 Imputed rentals for housing” was zero and the corresponding row and column sums similarly lower. Today the right number have been put in the cells in 2013 and 2014, and the corresponding row and column totals adjusted accordingly.

June 30, 2016

Today we have published a new series of input-output tables which is more up-to-date than the existing series. It covers the period from 1966 through 2014. Thus, two years of preliminary data have been added. The extension of the series is made at the expense of some of the detail in the original series. Thus, only 69 industries are covered compared to the original 117. The number of final demand categories is also more limited. The years 2013 and 2014 are forecasted based on 2012 and the published national accounts totals for 2013 and 2014. Data covering those two years will therefore be revised in November 2016 and 2015 will be added as a the newest preliminary year in line with the national accounts publication strategy.

June 07, 2016
The Excel version of the input-output tables for 1967-2007 in previous years prices has been corrected today. In the sheet DCB containing the detailed classification of household consumption by delivering industry the data in the columns were not in full agreement with the headings.

November 19, 2015
Input-output tables for 2012 in current and previous years prices are now available for download in Excel and GAUSS formats. Files in GAMS and SAS formats will be available later today.

August 10, 2015
Today, almost all of the downloadable files has been updated.

The first update concerns only previous years matrices. For the years 1967 - 2007, the three files sg<yy>, sc<yy> and se<yy> were by mistake set equal to the current price versions g<yy>, c<yy> and e<yy>. Furthermore, all of the coefficient matrices in previous years prices were calculated by division with these wrong values of the column totals. The result was that the columns of the coefficient matrices did not sum to one. The good thing, however, was that when the erroneous coefficient matrices were multiplied by the also erroneous column totals the correct matrices in levels were obtained. Consequently, the Excel files has not suffered from the error.

A minor correction has been made to the components of Gross Value Added in the years 2005 – 2011 in current prices. By a mistake Other taxes on production and Compensation of employees contained were set equal to the 2011 value in all years from 2005 to 2011. Therefore, Gross surplus and mixed income, which is calculated as a residual, contained an error as well. This applies to all file formats.

Last change is some improvement to the layout of the Excel files which applies to all years. Between intermediate consumption and final demand a column has been added containing the row sums by industry of intermediate consumtion.

November 28, 2014
Today a revised version of the Input-output tables has been released. The revision covers all years from 1966 through 2011. By a mistake, a major part of investment in machinery was initially added to investment in telecommunications. Thus, the revision is a simple relocation of the major part of  investment in telecommunication  to investment in machinery, and consequently all other numbers in the tables are left untouched.

November 6, 2014
Input-output tables for 2011 in current and previous years prices are now available for download in Excel, GAUSS, GAMS and SAS formats.

September 28, 2014
The full set of input-output tables in current and previous years prices covering the period 1966-2010 is now ready for download. Apart from the addition of previous years prices 1967-2007 the new set includes revised tables in current prices for the period 1966-1974as an error was discovered. The error concerned inventory changes and exports from the energy producing industries 060000, 190000, 350010, 350020 and 350030. But the updating procedure has consequently affected most other cells in the tables.

September 22, 2014
As from today the full series of tables from 1966 to 2010 in current prices are available for download. Tables in previous years prices for the period 1966 to 2004 will be made available shortly.

September 15, 2014

It has not been possible also to compile input-output tables for 2010 according to the current ESA1995 standard to be published now.

August 26, 2013
Today employment figures for all years and all formats have been changed so “Employment” now includes people on leave of absence. This is in agreement with the PDF-files describing the content of the tables. For all formats there are also the usual files containing the number of people on leave of absence that can be deducted from the employment figures in order to obtain “Employment, excl. people on leave of absence”.

August 20, 2013
Once more a new version of the tables have been posted.  The figures for Renting of residential buildings, Owner-occupied dwellings and Renting of non-residential buildings were still not listed in the correct order.

August 15, 2013
In the files that were published July, 1, the hours worked, employment and leave of absence were presented in the wrong order for 7 industries. It has been corrected today.

July 1, 2013

For 2009 wages and salaries  for each industry  has been changed slightly as well due to the same revision. Gross surplus and mixed income has been changed accordingly in the opposite direction, leaving gross value added unchanged. So far only the Excel files have been updated. Click on the ”Data” tab to see the data in Excel format.

Investment matrices based on the DB07 nomenclature will be put on the website in the future.

May 24, 2012
Today input-output tables in previous year’s prices for 2007 and 2008 have been corrected. The reason is that the handling of Scrap had been implemented in a non-uniform way in current and previous year’s price tables.

April 19, 2012
By mistake the input-output tables in previous years prices for the period 1967 through 1970 have been represented by tables for the period 1968 through 1971. Today this has been corrected for all types of files.

December 8, 2011
Today input-output tables for 2008 have been made available at the website. The set of product balances used as the basis for the compilation of the 2008 tables is slightly revised and extended when compared to the set of balances used for the 1966-2007 tables. This may appear as breaks in some of the detailed time series. Statistics Denmark will be looking at the possibility to recompile the 1966-2007 tables on the basis of the new set of product balances in order to avoid any breaks.

Investment matrices based on the DB07 nomenclature will be put on the website in the near future.

September 19, 2011

September 15, 2011
As a consequence of the introduction of the Danish Industrial Classification of All Economic Activities 2007 (DB07), a new national accounts industry classification has been developed. At the most detailed level, this classification contains 117 industries. The national accounts, input-output tables and the energy accounts are published by this classification for the first time 15 September 2011. All aggregates are the same as was published in November 2010, but the classification of industries is new.

Input-output tables for the period 1993-2007 have been compiled on the basis of reclassified supply and use tables and therefore adhere to the usual high quality standard. Input-output tables for the period 1966-1992 have been transformed on the basis of information at the most detailed level (single cells) obtained from a set of supply and use tables coded in both the new and the old classification.

The energy accounts have been transferred to the new industry classification as well, but the emission accounts have not yet been converted.

November 8, 2010
In connection with the publication of the Input-output Table for 2007 the estimated number of working hours of self-employed in 011009 Agriculture 1966 - 2001 has been changed in order to take account of supplementary information.

Since the publication of the input-output table for 2005 a revision has been carried out, mainly to the distribution of domestic supply to different groups of non-market public consumption. The domestic production has not been changed. The only other change has been a small one for the years 1990 - 2005 in other production taxes, net by industry 702009 Dwellings, resulting in an offsetting change in Gross operating surplus and mixed income.

Unfortunately, the energy data available for download at this website had come ahead of data available in www.Statistikbanken.dk (www.Statbank.dk). Therefore, today, the data available for download has been fully synchronized with what is available in the Statbank. Monetary versions of the Danish Energy matrices are no longer made available to the public. That is the case in the Statbank as well as on this website.

January 22, 2020
Energy matrices have been updated to cover the entire period from 1966 to 2018 regarding physical data and from 1966 to 2017 regarding monetary data.
All data should now be in alignment with energy data published on www.statbank.dk (www.statistikbanken.dk for the Danish version).

December 3 – 2013
Today all preliminary data concerned with the production and use of electricity in 2011 and 2012 have been corrected due to errors in the previous numbers.

Corrections are found in data for electricity in specific units (Gwh), common units (GJ), gross energy consumption as well as all numbers in economic value.

For all years prior to 2011 no changes have been made.

November 20 - 2013
In relation to the publication of the energy accounts 20 November 2013 the energy accounts for all years have been established in accordance with the principles in the national accounts systems SNA 2010 and ESA 2014. As the Danish national accounts will not be published according to SNA 2010 and ESA 2014 until September 2014, there will be some inconsistencies between the energy accounts and the national accounts and input-output tables at the most detailed level of classification of industries. However, at the most aggregated level (10a3) consistency is generally found, except for the monetary energy accounts for which minor deviations from the national accounts figures can be found.

With the revision of the energy accounts a new allocation of the production of electricity and district heat has been introduced. Electricity is now produced by "350010 Production and distribution of electricity" and by "383900 Waste management and materials recovery " District heat is produced by "350010 Production and distribution of electricity", "350030 Steam and hot water supply" and by "383900 Waste management and materials recovery".

November 23 - 2012
Data for the year 2011 is now available.

December 16 - 2011
