External trade, production and supply

How can I find sales figures for a specific commodity in Denmark?

External trade and production

Using data on production, imports and exports, respectively, it is possible to estimate the market supply.

A supply estimate = (domestic production plus imports) minus exports

Statistics Denmark does not have information on sales of individual commodities or brands.

Enterprises with trade or production of minor significance are not required to submit data for these statistics. For example, only enterprises with more than ten employees submit data for the production statistics, and many enterprises whose imports or exports are worth small amounts are not required to submit data for the external trade statistics.  Nor is it possible to take e.g. stock of the commodity into account.

How do you then find the exact commodity number for the commodity that you are interested in?

The key to detailed data on Denmark’s imports and exports are the 8-digit commodity codes in the Combined Nomenclature (CN). The Combined Nomenclature (CN) shows the full list and offers an option to search on words or commodity codes. You can also search for the commodity codes directly in the Statbank Denmark tables. Explanatory notes (in Danish) for the individual commodity codes are available at SKAT's eVITA søgeværktøj, which is a search tool made available by the Danish tax authorities.

Shortcuts for the tables on imports and exports CN (EU Combined Nomenclature) by imports and exports, commodities, country and unit:
Annual figures
Monthly figures 1988-2015
Monthly figures 2016-

If you want a less detailed breakdown of commodities, StatBank Denmark allows you to create tables on the 5-digit SITC commodity grouping or SITC main groups. Shortcuts to the tables:
Imports and exports divided by commodities (SITC 5 digits) and country
Imports and exports divided by commodities (SITC 2 digits) and country

Please note that the commodity codes may change from one year to the next. Certain commodity codes are left out from the tables, because the information is confidentialised. This means that the information is not published if e.g. the data of an individual enterprise can be recognised.

See more about method on the subject page Imports and exports in detail and in the publication on sources and methods used in the assessment of external trade and balance of payments "Udenrigshandel og betalingsbalance: Kilder og metoder“ (in Danish).

Shortcuts to the tables on the Danish production or commodity statistics by SITC main groups:
Manufacturers’ sales by main SITC groups (annual figures)
Manufacturers' sales by main SITC groups and seasonal adjustment (quarterly figures)

The documentation of statistics for Manufacturers’ Sales of Goods (quarterly) provides information on method etc.
