Selected statistics on Wealth and liabilities

This page shows selected popular statistics on the subject of Wealth and liabilities. In Statbank Denmark, you can find more data and compile your own statistics.

Correlation between age and net wealth

There is a close correlation between wealth and age. Young individuals typically leave home with minimal wealth. Over time, savings accumulate, often peaking near retirement, followed by a period of asset decumulation. It is important to note that averages can be significantly skewed by exceptionally large individual fortunes, whereas the median offers a more accurate reflection of the typical wealth level within the group under analysis.

Different types of assets

Net wealth consists of real estate, vehicles, financial assets such as bank deposits, securities like shares, and pension assets. Debt is subtracted from this.

Distribution of wealth in stocks

Men have accumulated larger average fortunes in individual stocks compared to women, and wealth typically increases with age. The gender differences are somewhat smaller when looking at investment funds.

Net wealth in the municipalities

Net wealth is typically highest in municipalities north of Copenhagen and in areas with a large proportion of older residents. In urban areas, where many young people reside, net wealth is generally lower. Click on the map to view the name and median net wealth (in DKK) for the selected municipality.

Negative net wealth

If a person's debt exceeds the value of their assets, their net wealth becomes negative. The reasons can include overspending or unfortunate circumstances such as divorce. However, negative net wealth can also be more deliberate, for example, when individuals take out student loans.
