Definition

Material footprint accounts for the amount of primary materials, measured in raw material equivalents, associated with the Danish economy. The indicator is calculated as domestic resource extraction plus the raw material equivalents of imports, minus the raw material equivalents of exports. The material footprint per capita describes the average raw material consumption in the economy. The indicator follows the UN definition and is based on calculations in the environmental-economic accounts. A more detailed methodological description can be found in the statistical documentation for the economy-wide material flow accounts on Statistics Denmark’s website.
