Organic production and trade

Here you will find statistics concerning e.g. the number of organic farms in Denmark, whether the sale of organic milk has increased or decreased and which organic foods we primarily import.

Introduction

The demand for organic goods is increasing not only in Denmark, but also globally. The development in the home production of organic goods and in the organic market is continuously documented by Statistics Denmark in various statistical series comprising the following groups:

  • The production and accounts of organic farmholdings contains information about the number of organic farms in Denmark, the size of the agricultural area, crops, livestock and animal production. In addition, the series focuses on the income, accounts and financial results of organic farms.
  • Domestic trade in organic foods includes the turnover of organic foods and drinks in Danish supermarkets and department stores as well as the sale to restaurants, canteens etc. (food service).
  • Imports and exports of organic foods describe the extent of foreign trade in organic goods broken down by goods and countries.

The statistics include foods and drinks. Organic clothes, cosmetics and feed for pets are not included (constitutes a very small percentage of the total organic consumption in households). Feed for livestock is included in the figures for imports and exports and is indirectly included in the organic agricultural areas.

Fishery

Fish caught in the wild are neither defined as organic nor as conventional goods. The production in organic fish farming is described in the publication “Accounts statistics for fishery and aquaculture”.

Økologiske varer fylder markant mere i danskernes indkøbskurve.
