Definition
The indicator shows the proportion of people aged 15 and over who feel safe in their neighbourhood. It is calculated as the number of people who answered 1, 2 or 3 to the question "On a scale from 1 to 7, where 1 means 'I generally feel safe in my neighbourhood' and 7 means 'I generally feel unsafe in my neighbourhood', how safe or unsafe do you feel?" as a proportion of the total population aged 15 and over. The result is expressed as a percentage.
The indicator differs from the UN definition in two ways. First, the indicator covers people aged 15 and over, whereas the UN definition covers adults. Second, the indicator measures how safe people generally feel in their neighbourhood, whereas the UN definition covers people who feel safe walking alone in their neighbourhood.
The indicator was originally calculated by the Danish National Police. Since 2021, it has been calculated by the Research Unit of the Danish Ministry of Justice.
