The different looks of the Statistical Yearbooks

Changes in society and language has lead to changes in the Statistical Yearbook. But also the appearance, design and structure of the book has changed considerably.

The structure of the yearbook has not changed much
The structure of the yearbook, e.g. the order of the chapters, has only to some degree changed over time. Most of the statistical subject areas are the same. However, some of the names has changed in line with the development of the Danish language and the statistical language. Only a few statistical subject areas have been deleted from the yearbook or redefined to a degree that they almost cover a whole new subject.

Other subject areas have been extended and yet others have been reduced. However, the tables and annexes, e.g. subject index and definitions and glossary, have changed considerably.

Easier to change the design as a result of the arrival of the computer

The appearance of the yearbook has undergone many changes since the first edition. Like all other printed media the yearbook has been influenced by the techonological advances, e.g. the arrival of the computer and the various word processors and graphical editors. This lead to significant changes in the design of the yearbook, the chapters and the individual tables.

Below is a number of different covers of the yearbook and there are also examples of pages from these editions.

The Statistical Yearbook 1896

The appearance and design of the first edition of the Statistical Yearbook was retained until 1958. It is characteristical for these yearbooks that the editors have attached importance to continuity because in that way changes over time and from year to year can be examined.

The use of lines and italic translation text is another characteristics of these editions. The Statistical Yearbook.
