Statistical Concepts Livestock unit:
One livestock unit is a unit of calculation which until 19 December 1999 corresponded to a dairy cow of large stock without breeding. As from 19 December 1999, one livestock unit corresponds to a maximum of 100 kg of nitrogen in manure (ex stock) including the quantity deposited by the animals on the field. The conversion factors for individual animal species are specified in Annex 1 to the Order.
Type of holding:
There are five categories:
Cattle, pigs, poultry, other livestock holdings and plant growers with livestock.
If e.g. two thirds of the livestock units on a holding are pigs, then the holding falls into the category pigs. The category other livestock holdings comprises mixed holdings where cattle, pigs or poultry each constitutes less than two thirds of the livestock units. Holdings with less then 0.5 livestock units per hectare are (notwithstanding the above mentioned rules) regarded as plant growers with livestock.
