1 Contents1.1 Description of ContentsThe purpose of the statistics is to show the size og and the development in Danish enterprises' trade in IPR (patents, trademarks, design, utility models).
The most important variables are:
1) Type of IPR-trade (purchase, sale, licensing)
2) Type of IPR traded (patent, trademark, design, utility model)
3) Trade partner
4) Trade within/without own activity/technological area
5) IPR-strategy
Copyright is not covered by the statistics.
Besides the compulsory questions also a number of voluntary questions collected. For 2008 these are:
* Expectations concerning future trade in IPR
* Pirat copying
* Measures against pirat copying
* Advantages and barriers related to purchase and licensing in of IPR
Not all the voluntary questions will be posed in future surveys.
1.2 Statistical ConceptsThe survey is based on two surveypopulations:
The first population consist of enterprises which meet one or more of the following conditions:
* have registered a patent, a design or a utility model in 2003-2007 in Denmark
* have purchased/sold immaterial assets according to the Industrial Accounts Statistics 2006
* have reported certain posts to External trade in services 2008
This population consists of app. 1.500 enterprises.
The second population is a sample of enterprises with 10 or more employees. This population consists of app. 2.500 enterprises.
Coverage:
The statistics cover enterprises with 10 or more employees that are part of the Industrial Accounts statistics 2006.
2 Time2.1 Reference Periodin 2007 the enterprises were asked for information on trade in IPR during the latest 5-year-period.
In 2008 they are asked of the trade during 2003-2007 and in 2008. It is the intention to ask only for trade during the last calendar year from 2009.
2.2 Date of Publication12 months after the end of the referenceyear.
2.3 PunctualityThe statistics is published as scheduled.
2.4 FrequencyYearly.
3 Accuracy3.1 Overall accuracyThe accuracy of the qualitative informations on trade, IPR-strategy etc. is considered relatively high.
3.2 Sources of inaccuracyThe number of IP-rights traded is in some cases based on an estimate from the respondent, and therefore there are some uncertainty connected with the raised figures.
3.3 Measures on accuracyNot calculated.
4 Comparability4.1 Comparability over TimeThe statistics are in 2007 and 2008 calculated for the socalled Resource areas, which are coheret business areas. The resource area definition is based on the
Danish Activity classification, Dansk Branchekode 1993 (DB03). For 2008 the statistics can also be calculated on basis of DB07. A key between the DB07 and the resource areas has not been established.
Renewal of reference period:
With the objectives of reducing the response burden and at the same time obtain higher precision in the calculations, it has been decided that from the reference year 2009 and onwards only information on trade during the last calendar year will be collected.
The 2008-statistics are therefore a transition year for which information on trade in IPR is asked both for 2003-2007 and for 2008.
The comparability between 2007 and 2008 is considered to be good. As the formulations in the questionnaires for the 2 years are not totally identical this might affect the comparability, though.
4.2 Comparability with other StatisticsThere are no official statistics of which the variables are totally somparable to the statistic on trade in IPR. There are a number of statistics in which information are collected that are comparable to a certain extent. These are:
* External trade in service, in which enterprises are asked for information on total purchase of patents, licensing, frinchising, royalties etc.
* Statistics on manufacturing industries' purchase of services, in which enterprises are asked for information on their purchase of licenses, royalties, type-approvals etc.
* Statistics on enterprises research, development and innovation, where enterprises are asked whether they have purchased patents, licenses etc, or have applied for a patent during the reference year..
