0.4 Purpose and HistoryThe purpose of "Livestock units in agriculture" is to produce statistics describing the number of livestock units in farm holdings, including figures for type of farm holding, area of farm holding and geographical distribution of farm holdings.
Furthermore, the livestock holdings are also described according to their distribution as harmonious or non-harmonious, regarding the level of livestock units per hectare.
0.5 Users and ApplicationUsers:
Public authorities (municipalities, counties, government), organisations, companies and private individuals.
Applications:
Estimation of national and county levels of harmonious and non-harmonious holdings. The level of larger livestock holdings is of special concern to the users.
Used for planning of statutory orders for livestock manure, silage, etc., for the purpose of reducing their levels.
0.6 SourcesEvery year Statistics Denmark collects data for one third of the livestock holdings. However, for 1999, all livestock holdings have supplied information. The data are located in the General Agricultural Register, from which the figures are drawn. For information about this register, see the declaration of contents for agriculture and gardening.
0.7 Legal Authority to Collect DataSee 0.6.
0.8 Response burdenThere is no response burden as the data are collected by The office For Agriculture.
0.9 EU RegulationNone.

1.2 Statistical ConceptsLivestock unit:
One livestock unit is a unit of calculation which until 19 December 1999 corresponded to a dairy cow of large stock without breeding. As from 19 December 1999, one livestock unit corresponds to a maximum of 100 kg of nitrogen in manure (ex stock) including the quantity deposited by the animals on the field. The conversion factors for individual animal species are specified in Annex 1 to the Order.
Type of holding:
There are five categories:
Cattle, pigs, poultry, other livestock holdings and plant growers with livestock.
If e.g. two thirds of the livestock units on a holding are pigs, then the holding falls into the category pigs. The category other livestock holdings comprises mixed holdings where cattle, pigs or poultry each constitutes less than two thirds of the livestock units. Holdings with less then 0.5 livestock units per hectare are (notwithstanding the above mentioned rules) regarded as plant growers with livestock.
